Newark Market 11th November

Newark Market

Today we weren’t going to be late into town. We have just missed the market twice now, not today. Sadly last week I arrived as everyone on the farmers market was packing up for the day, this only happens on the first Wednesday in the month, so I have made a note of it. I like a good farmers market. Newark has a general market on Wednesdays Fridays and Saturdays, on Mondays and Thursdays it is an antiques and craft market.

How many angles do you need?

Our first port of call was the tool stall, which has all sorts of tools from 50p sandpaper to a huge socket set at £85 (it does go up to 50mm diameter!). I found a chalk line for £1, it may not be great quality but better than the one I discovered was broken in February in my painting kit. There is everything that you would expect on a market. We picked up some veg for tonight, a loaf of bread and Mick tried to see if someone could give him a new watch strap. The watch strap stall holder is going to see if she has anything at home that will do it. Other places we’ve tried have said it needs to go back to Cassio!

We were also on the hunt for some moisture traps as one of our kitchen cupboards seems to be collecting moisture by itself. These were found reduced in Wilko, so we got some spare.

Another mission is to find a good butcher for our Christmas bird. So far there are three to choose from. One seems to do a very good selection of different types of bacon, sausages and pies and all things pig related, but no ducks. We may have to sample their wares before deciding.

This may have been a butchers

Various buildings stood out to us today. A shop front (now a house) that was fully tiled, with a very large sash window. It felt like it should have been a butchers. The tiled entrance to what was the Clinton Arms Hotel, now an entrance to a shopping area. A pub that is apparently on the Civil War Ale Trail, now we may just have to see what that is about at some point!

0 locks, 0 miles, 1 huge market, 2 moisture traps, 1 pub on the list to visit, 1/3 soup consumed, 1 homemade  roast chicken and leek pie in the oven.
