24th July

Not a fantastic nights sleep due to the heat and a very busy cat through the early early hours of the morning. As we hadn’t stocked up on fresh food Mick headed off to Tescos in the car whilst I stayed with Houdini.

By the time Mick got back with the provisions it was nearly midday and the boat was beginning to get very hot indeed. The back hatch has to remain almost closed otherwise we’d have an Awol cat!  A degree in maths isn’t helping at the moment, angles of trajectory, potential energy etc are all being thwarted!

After breakfast / lunch Mick set about to hoover the car out before we sell it. General dirt and three or four trips to the tip with garden waste earlier in the week necessitated this. The engine running got Houdini on edge again, but all things she has to get used to. With the car moved we decided to seek out some shade just around the corner. So we winded and turned right, back onto the Rochdale Canal. There is a good covering of trees on tow path side and we were grateful for them even though the boat was roasting already.

Time to start pulling the bed to bits. Under our bed down one side is the holding tank (more commonly know by us as the pooh tank), but the other side is a large space that the previous owner had filled with polystyrene along with some ballast. We could do with the space, so screw driver, blocks of wood and webbing were put to use to make it easy to pull up the slats for access. The amount of poly under there nearly filled the cratch. Stage two will happen at another time, hovering it out and storing bits. We were concerned about our batteries and a hover is not Houdinis’ favourite noise.

Behind the sofa is quite interesting too. Living in this sauna has dampened my appetite, well apart from the odd bit of ham, there’s always an appetite for ham!

Unfortunately the sun has a tendency to move and gave us full blast during the late afternoon, so we were still sweltering with the heat. A shelf was put up just under one of the windows to give Houdini a better view.

Late afternoon a flash wide beam pulled up in front of us, it took them about 20 mins to put their pram cover up and get settled with a G&T. These boats are just so huge they can’t be fun to steer.

Quiche and strawberries for tea. Still not very hungry, so went for a nap on a very nice fleece in the back of the interesting cupboard, it has been a busy fraught day!

Mick set up the new TV and we cleared the sofa to watch it. At bed time I achieved a nice hug and purr from Houdini.

200 yrds, some shade, 1 worn out wagging tail, 1 purring hug, 1 very large bag of pointless stuff.
